Taizé is a community in France founded over sixty years ago by Brother Roger of Taizé. Taizé is like a shoot grafted on the tree of the monastic life. As a community Taizé is a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and between separated peoples—“a parable of communion”.
What is a service?
The Taizé Service features a form of contemplative prayer where simple refrains are sung again and again, giving them a meditative character.
Using just a few words, easily accessible to the heart and mind, the songs express basic realities of faith. As the words are sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. Meditative singing thus becomes a way of listening to God. These songs also sustain personal prayer. Through them, little by little, our being finds an inner unity in God. At each service there are also readings from scripture, followed by times of silence for prayer and reflection.
Words to Reflect On
“Prayer is a serene force at work within human beings, stirring them up, transforming them, never allowing them to close their eyes in the face of evil, or wars, of all that threatens the weak of this world.”
“All who walk in the footsteps of Christ, while being in the presence of God, remain alongside other people as well. They do not separate prayer and commitment.”
